Pedagogy

Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is simple: access equals success. To me this phrase encapsulates the importance of a student’s access to information, good teaching, quality instruments, and performance opportunities to ensure them a more equitable chance of success.

As a performer I have volunteered many hours with community-based wind ensembles and orchestras, donated recitals and solo performances, and served on judging panels and committees. As a teacher I have worked in rural and inner-city settings to create access to learning and performance opportunities for students and help to secure financial support for these when there was a need.

Practice

In the past, my teaching experience was mainly private lessons for modern oboe and reedmaking lessons with students of all ages. Currently I am cultivating a small studio of beginning and intermediate Baroque oboe students and teaching reedmaking to advanced students and professional colleagues. My initial experience with teaching at a higher learning institution was as a student chamber music coach while attending the Townsend School of Music. I have since held university positions as a graduate teaching assistant at the College-Conservatory of Music and my faculty position at Georgia Southern University, where I taught a combined oboe and bassoon studio.
